What to Consider Before Buying Wallpaper

Posted in Decorating Tips, Wallpaper Trends, Wall Home Decor at 12:26 pm by Carrie Wigal

Rolls of WallpaperDo you want to save a lot of time and trouble? Consider these six tips on where to buy wallpaper before making your next purchase.

Whenever making any wallpaper purchase, you should:

Make sure the pattern/color you are purchasing is not discontinued. If it is, you will have a very hard (if not impossible) time trying to find more if needed.

For example some brick & mortar stores may have ordered stock a long time ago. Due to low traffic volume, that stock could have sat on the shelf for ages. It is possible that whatever is being sold might not be available for re-order. Also discontinued merchandise is usually not returnable…even if it is damaged/defective.

Chances are good, however, that if you can find a particular pattern/color in more than one place, then it is probably still a current pattern and readily available.

Make sure the product is first quality…not seconds or damaged goods.

This is especially true if the selling price is extraordinarily cheap or if a consumer instead of a retailer is selling it. Read the rest of this entry »

Decorative Switch Plates Make Great Wall Accents

Winnie the Pooh Switch PlateIf you still have plain light switches and outlet covers in every room of your house, listen up. You can spice up your rooms with decorative plate covers. You can either make them yourself or buy them already made…and the selection is vast.

For rooms with existing wallpaper/border, you can use any leftover wallpaper/border to cover your plates so they coordinate with your walls. Instead of just covering them to blend in with the wall, choose a pattern that causes them to jump out and accent your wall. If your walls are just painted, then the options are limitless. If you’re crafty, making them yourself will be a breeze. If not, check out eBay and you’ll find a whole host of covers to choose from.

The switch plate pictured above coordinates with Pooh & Friends Wall Border from the Disney Home Collection.

Lamp Shades Decorate a Room

New York Yankees LampshadeWhen redecorating a room, don’t forget about your lighting. While it may seem that you will have to purchase all new lamps for your new décor, sometimes all you need is a new lampshade. Replacing a lampshade is a lot cheaper than purchasing a whole new lamp.

I find it is easier to wait until your major room components are in place before selecting new lampshades. Let the theme of your new room evolve, then select lamp shades that either compliment or contrast with your theme. For example, a wild safari room with a zebra rug on the floor, might be well-served by a simple solid-color lamp shade to help offset the boldness of the rug. However, in a less wild décor, such as a simple, clean, contemporary design, a bold lampshade would add visual interest to the room. Don’t be afraid to experiment! Read the rest of this entry »

Selling Wallpaper…Doesn’t Anybody Do It?

Posted in Wallpaper Trends, Wall Home Decor at 11:38 pm by Carrie Wigal

At first glance it appears that wallpaper (borders, more specifically) is a saturated market, but you know, I’m having second thoughts. Nobody really sells the stuff. They just slap up an e commerce store and show pretty pictures with prices, but nobody is really talking about the benefits and features of wallpaper in general, let alone trying to sell to people who aren’t already actively looking for a particular pattern.
